• Turkish-speaking people migrated and invaded Northen India from central Asia

• Many brought Islam to region because they dealt with the Abbasid caliphate

• Muslim mechants married into caste system

• as agricutural output increased higher prominence artisan and merchant guilds

• huge agriculural guilds = higher population

• trade more important, migration to cities

• traded specialized crops, spices

• Hindu leaders organized agricultural activity

• larger ships were more stable = increased trade (Junks, Dhows)

• the Sultanate of Delhi, was the 2nd most populated Muslim cities

• India protruded into the Indian Basin, so it was a good place to wait for the Monsoon winds to change, shorter trips while returning
